Testing the Safety Reversal System

The most critical part of any garage door opener inspection is testing its safety features. The auto-reverse mechanism is designed to prevent the door from crushing an object, pet, or person in its path. You should test this system monthly. To check the pressure sensitivity, place a 2×4 piece of wood flat on the ground in the door’s path. When the closing door makes contact with the wood, it should immediately reverse direction. If it doesn’t, the force setting is too high and needs adjustment. Next, test the photo-eye sensors. These are the small boxes located a few inches off the floor on either side of the door opening. With the door closing, simply wave an object like a broom handle in front of one of the sensors. The door should instantly stop and reverse. If it fails either of these tests, it’s a significant safety hazard that requires immediate attention from a professional.

Checking Mechanical and Electrical Components

Beyond the safety features, a visual and auditory inspection of the opener’s hardware can reveal signs of wear and tear. Start by listening to the motor as it runs. Does it sound strained, or do you hear any grinding or scraping noises? Unusual sounds often indicate that internal gears are wearing out or that the chain or belt needs lubrication and adjustment. Look at the drive mechanism itself. If you have a chain drive, check for any sagging; it should have just a slight amount of play. For a belt drive, look for signs of fraying or cracking. Also, inspect the wiring connected to the motor unit. Ensure all connections are secure and that there are no signs of frayed or damaged wires, which could create a fire hazard. Finally, check the function of your remotes and wall panel. If you notice a decreased range or intermittent operation, it could be as simple as a dying battery or a sign of a failing receiver board in the main unit, a common precursor to needing a garage door opener repair.
